Guardians: Caretaking and Placemaking

on St. James Court

"The place-maker often speaks as witness on the scene… creating in the process a vivid sense that what happened long ago – right here, on this very spot – could be happening now." - Keith H. Basso

With prints, artifacts, and interviews, Guardians: Care-taking and Place-making on St. James Court investigates processes by which neighbors create their own identities within their community by reviving and revising the history of their homes. St. James Court, a circular row of Victorian houses in Louisville, Kentucky, is an example of such a historical stage. Buildings and structures on the Court allow a constantly shifting population of directors to bring the past back into being, again and again.
