From 1875 to 1902, twelve Black jockeys won sixteen Kentucky Derbies, becoming some of the first great American athletes. This time also bore witness to the construction of buildings and traditions that we recognize today, and the deconstruction of the Civil Rights Act of 1875 with the rise of legalized segregation. Rendered on pages of an 1869 treatise on equine anatomy, training, and care, A Place on the Globe is intended to provide an introduction to the times, places, and people of the first Kentucky Derbies, and the layers of complex history embedded within.
